About Us

The VEC helps to ensure that BC and Canada’s vaccines are safe and effective by conducting research to improve our understanding of them. The research conducted at the VEC includes:

CFRI building

The VEC is located within the Child and Family Research Institute at BC Children’s Hospital.

  • Surveillance of hospital admissions for vaccine preventable diseases such as influenza, pneumococcal, chickenpox to name a few.
  • We study the safety and effectiveness of vaccines that are under development.
  • We partner with government agencies to monitor the safety and effectiveness of vaccines after they are introduced into vaccine programs.
  • We partner with government agencies to monitor the impact of new immunization programs on disease elimination.

 

Established in 1988 at BC’s Children’s Hospital, the VEC is a project jointly supported by the hospital and the University of British Columbia and is affiliated with the Child and Family Research Institute.  The VEC brings together researchers from diverse backgrounds to work together towards a common goal of optimizing immunization programs.
