Children are being invited to take part in a study to determine how well children who have completed treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) respond to vaccines against childhood illnesses. This study is being conducted by researchers at the Vaccine Evaluation Center (VEC) and the BC Chil
dren’s Hospital’s Division of Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant.
Children who have been treated for ALL usually lose their immunity to childhood illnesses and require re-vaccination. They are known to be at high risk of complications from a number of infections including Pneumococcus, which can cause severe pneumonia and meningitis. It is important to ensure children are well protected through immunization. By taking part in this study, you will help doctors caring for children post ALL treatment determine which immunizations to give and the timing of the vaccinations.
